With any MVNO such as Straight Talk, it can be a tricky proposition as they have contracts with all four major carriers: AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint.
If using Straight Talk, you should first look at only CDMA phones, which puts you on either Verizon or Sprint. You still have to tread carefully, as not all model phones they sell directly, are available on both their networks. Second, use a zip code as your primary home area that is known for use on the Verizon Network. You can find these online. Then you can take advantage of Straight Talks lower monthly plans versus directly from Verizon.
I'm using an iPhone on PagePlus which only uses Verizon, but requires 4G mobile phones you want to activate, must have its rom flashed to use only 3G data.
I also have a Galaxy S3 I'm currently testing on Freedom Pop which uses Sprint's mobile data network or WiFi for all calls. It's purely VoIP, and I was quite skeptical of their service. But to my surprise, the call quality appears just as good as other carriers when using Sprint's 4G LTE, though very limited coverage at this stage. I'm testing it on their free monthly plan of 200min voice/500 text/500mb of 4G LTE/3G data. Calls don't count against mobile data usage.
