I have had ST for about 6 years now. I just bought a Galaxy S3 and was able to transfer everything by going on line without calling anyone. DH has a tracfone for about 9 years now. We have traveled the northeast and I haven't had a problem with service. There has only been a few times that I didn't have service but nobody else did at that particular time. There was one time when I couldn't get data but was still able to talk and text. Our local Wally World is very helpful in knowing the networks and the phone that you can use. However, we don't tether either.
