Sat TV Service

We are going full time. What service is available to Canadians that will also give us Sat coverage in the US. Would it be a Canadian or a US based system. Our motorhome presently has a King Dom in motion sat. This is all new to us and would appreciate any help.
  • Shaw Direct works well all the way into Mexico with the 75cm dish EXCEPT for the HD channels. As I type this we in Puerto Vallarta watching the Bronze Medal game of the Briar Curling on TSN.

DO NOT tell Shaw that you are taking it to the USA. Get is set up in the stick house and simply move a receiver to the rig.

They do now have an RV arrangement to get the extra dish and LNB needed but it will cost. We got ours many years ago when Starchoice would supply it free--including shipping!

An automatic dish will set you back several thousand but really takes the frustration out of it, especially for one night stays. Or catching the Noon News at a lunch stop!

We could not find an installer but there is one in Langley who comes over to the Island occasionally or you can go to him. PM me for his phone number. I have it somewhere but will have to dig it out

We have used the Starchoice (now Shaw Direct)system at home for decades, before cable came into the neighbourhood. We found it to be as good as cable and now can just swap receivers whenever we wish.

    We have this one.
  • Shaw Direct works right now in Canada, the USA and Mexico . That said You must be stealthy in the way that You set Your system up .

The reasons are beyond B.S. I won't go into it on this or any other Forum!

If the Stories are true ,whatever system that You ,I ,or anyone else chooses will be totally obsolete in Four or Five Years time.

Don't waste Your $ on anything beyond the basics!
  • The Canadian Shaw Direct service is available in the US but will not work with your King Dome. You will need a full sized open face antenna exactly those you see on a home or business.
In the US, you can sign up for service with DirecTV or Dish if you have a US address to use and a US credit card (or you could buy a reloadable CC). Dish has a pay-as-you-go service allowing monthly service. DirecTV requires a 12 or 18 month contract but can be suspended for up to 6 months at a time (extending your contract period by the suspended periods).
Both DirecTV and Dish will work with your King Dome. You cannot receive the DirecTV HD programming with your dome and depending upon the age of your King Dome, it may or may not allow you to receive the HD programming. The KD must be capable of pointing to the 129 and not only 110 and 119 for Dish HD.
  • Do a search on this forum. Check my post from 3 days ago and that will give you a good start.
  • Not 100%certain but I believe nobody has international sat coverage. I know Direct TV doesn't. If you go international you need a Canadian provider and then a US provider. Not sure about Mexico but I would guess it's the same. Here again not 100% sure so check with the Sat dealers.
