Satellite Service

We just bought our first used coach that has Direct TV installed dome on roof. We do not have direct TV at home. We are trying to figure out the best way to just get it for our trips. We are not full timers. We have been told bu other full timers we can get it turned on for only a few days at a time but when we call for DTV service they tell us we have to buy the whole package that they don't do RV sales. Help?
  • They have a dome and they are getting setup with Dish Network with is the right thing to do. It's unlikely that the call, call, call again would work with DirecTV anyway. Even if it did, why would you want to have service from someone you have to beat over the head to get them to take your money.
Dish has service specifically setup for their situation AND they can get HD with Dish and their dome if they choose.

First a question: Your roof-top antena is it a DOME, or is it a ROUND dish or is it an OVAL dish?

Dome/Round dish can see satelite 101.. This is used for DirecTV (SD not HD).

Call DirecTV, Tell them you want to set up an RV account, get transferred to King dome,, Hang up

    Call back, do it again

Call back and tell 'em "You transfer me to King Dome I'm calling Dish" and they will get you to someone who can set it up for you.. That simple.

IF you have a OVAL Dish with an odd looking extra wide LNB... Odds are this is a DirecHDTV antenna.. Now there are 3 kinds of those. and you need to know just which yours is.. Contact the antenna maker to find out.. then

    See above.

As you have discovered, DirecTV will not activate service for short term usage. However, you dome is capable of receiving the programming from either DirecTV or Dish. You don't say what brand antenna you own but some are simple to change and some require special software. If you can find out what make and model dome you have I could give you additional information.
If you are able to change your dome over to a Dish setup, Dish offers a pay-as-you-go service. You must purchase the receiver (usually less than $100) and then sign up for the PAYG when you are ready to watch satellite. You can turn it on for as little as 30 days. If you don't need it for the entire 30 days you can call Dish, have the service disconnected and they will hold a "days credit" but no refunds.

Thank you! WE have a Kingdome (?) and a antenna that pops up. 1 digital TV and the others are analog. DTV only allows suspension 2x/yr. We are not full timers so this isn't good for us and dont want satellite at the house. We ended up ordering a Dish receiver because of their pay as you go. Hoping that works for us. Thanks for all advise.

  • Just call DirecTV and order the package you want and a basic (not HD) receiver have it shipped to your home. It is easy to install. We did it ourselves.
Once you activate the receiver and service, you can easily suspend it when you are not using it (with some restrictions): Here's the instructions and criteria for suspension of service: https://support.directv.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2430
I love DirecTV. One thing: you will not get local affiliate channels if you are over 150 miles from your service address. To get locals, you will either have to have a digital TV and antenna to scan for locals or subscribe to an RV account and pay for NY or LA affiliate stations.
  • Maybe it is time to investigate satellite TV for home. That way all you will need is to take one of the receivers from home for the RV.
  • Dish is more in tune with RVers for short bouts of service and most domes can do either Directv or Dish. No domes currently provide Directv HD channels if that's important which is why we use a portable HD satellite dish set-up to acquire HD content from Directv, although there are automated non-dome dishes that can be mounted on an RV roof to obtain HD signals.
  • if your dome will work with dish, you can get part time, etc. service from them.

Some domes can be changed to other services like Dish by changing settings. If you have service at the house, you maybe able to take the receiver from house and use it in rig.

    No we have local cable.
