Satellite TV question

I'm sure this has been asked but...

If I have a home TV subscription to DirecTV (or Dish) can I take a receiver from home (assume I buy another dish or a tailgator or similar) and use in the RV? ie does the receiver "know" where it is? Does the subscription follow the receiver? Any advice on this?

I have Comcast and am thinking of going to DirecTV and one of the "pros" I'm thinking of is taking a receiver on the road when we go (assuming I need a dish of some sort).

My outings would be short (ie, max 7 days or so, and within 200 miles of home)

Thoughts, advice, wisdom would be appreciated.

  • Since I have had Dish at home for many years, I bought an additional receiver for the RV thru dishformyrv.com and pay an extra $7/mo to add it to the home account. I prefer that to having to disconnect the home receiver, move it to the RV, hook it up, disconnect it when we get home, move it back to the house, and hook it all up again. The receiver is pretty cheap. Also bought a Tailgater.
With Dish when you travel outside your home programming area and can't receive local channels you can call Dish and tell them you are in the RV and you want to change your service address to where ever you are located at the time. They will reprogram you and within a few minutes you will receive local network channels from the nearest large city. Great for catching up on the news and local weather forecast and watching your favorite programs in real time.
And you can add a hard drive and turn the receiver into a DVR to record your programs.
  • Yes, you can do this.
No, the receiver does not know where it is and neither does Dish or DirecTV.
If you travel within a few hundred miles of home you will likely get all of the same programming you receive at home. If you travel too far from home you will lose you Network programming (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX) but all other programming is available Nationwide.
  • I use one of the standard receivers from the house to use in MH. Once we get out of our "local" area we loose local channels. We don't much care about them. When we get to larger cities we use the antenna for local channels if we want them.
Yes, the receiver knows where it is at.
We get our local news via the computer.
Not sure what part of WA you are in. Most of the local channels we get are out of Spokane. We can get them down to around Lewiston, over to Butte,MT area. and West to Wenatchee. I have not checked on the west side.
  • That is what a large percentage of RV satellite users do, including me.
