Saving on mobile data

An app named Onava Extend can help save you on mobile data use. I like many others am on a limited mobile data plan that costs me lots of money if I go over my plan limit. Onava Extend is an app that sets up a VPN (virtual private network) between your phone and your data carrier. It then compresses the data to save on the bandwidth you use. This little app saves me an average of 300 mb daily. That adds up over a short time to big savings. I was always exceeding my plans limit till I started using this free program. I heard about this app on the Kim Komando show, the radio internet guru.
  • There are some limitations. Only certain mobile devices are supported, and compression is limited to downloaded mobile data. Not data that is uploaded including files, photos, and videos. No compression is done or possible with secured SSL sites such as Google or Dropbox by default.

Opera mobile browser has been compressing data for some time. They apparently also have a new app Opera Max which works in a similar manner.
  • Reminds me of the days of data compression on dial up modems. The phone companies sure like to go full circle.
