Saving PDFs on ipad

New user of iPad here. Just wondering how I can save a doc, probably a PDF from the Internet to the iPad itself not via a link. I want to be able to access the doc when no internet is available. Thx!
  • Easiest way is to hover near the top of the pdf after you open in Safari (while connected to internet). Should be able to save to iBooks from there. After that just open in iBooks. I try to download all the user manuals for my trailer to that for reference.
Alternatively you can connect to your computer and drag the pdf to iTunes where you can drop on your connected iPad. They show up in same iBooks app. The iBooks app comes with your iPad but you may have to download it from the store for free.
  • Also...

If it's not to big you can email it to yourself.
You can then open it in iBook.
  • There's a program/app called Dropbox that you can put on the iPad and on your home computer. (Whatever you put into it will be available from both sources.)

When you open a PDF, the iPad will ask you if you want to save it to Dropbox.

I use it a lot for brochures, maps, campground site maps etc that I want to view later.

Also very handy for sharing big files and photos with other people.
  • Just down load the Adobe Reader App. When you have a PDF you want to save, use Open With and chose the Adobe Reader.

I know on a 'droid, If I long press it gives me the option to "Save Link As" or "Save File As" depending on who coded the thing..

On one of my 'Droids that "Save/Open" dialog is displayed by default, but no "Save As" (it saves with the original file name and I can rename later.

Does IOS offer that same option.. And of course I do not know if you can open it once you save it.

I don't do Incomplete Operating Systems.
  • I second mjbenedict's comments. Just tap on the PDF you want to save and then tap on the blue "Open in iBooks" link at the top and it will save to your iBooks library for opening in the future. I have a lot of RV manuals and drawings set up on my iPad just like that.

I cannot seem to open up Safari. I use chrome and whenever I try to open Safari, chrome comes up. I am sure there must be a Similar way to save thru chrome, I just don;t know how, and would prefer not to have to switch browsers. thx.

In Chrome, tap once on the PDF and you should see a link to "Open in..." in the lower right corner. Then you can tap on "Copy to iBooks" (or Adobe Acrobat if you installed that PDF reader) to save the document.

Wow thx! So simple even I can do it. Sorta embarrassing that I don't know the basics. I have used a pc before and find myself missing the right key to click what I want. Thx again.
