Secure way to purchase on line? not

All I can say is wow, just wow, all what IS in these privacy policy's.

I went to sign up for Visa Checkout. My bank claims this is done under layers and layers of protection when purchasing on line with your debit card or credit card.

I started to read the privacy policy for Visa Checkout and half way through it states that 'visa checkout' sells your info to each and every place you purchase which can and does include your card number and personal info. And then states you are on your own with what that company's privacy policy is.

AND THEN

Way near the end of the policy I get to the part that Visa Checkout gives 'Google' all your info including your card number etc. and then states that you are on your own with what google will do with your info based on 'their' privacy policy.

So a new way to pay on line with 'layers and layers of privacy' from your bank means squat once you sign off to join 'visa checkout' AND that you ultimately also agree to let Google have your info.

Google, they give info off your bank card to google!:S

Boy you just have to read these privacy policy's all the way thru 'before' you click on anything. They are counting on that you won't.

  • Or better yet use a service like Shopsafe where you can create a new Visa card number for any amount and any length of time, and it tracks right on your normal Visa bill. Easy to use and great for things where they "auto-renew" but you may not want to "auto-renew".

  • It's a bad idea to use a debit card for online purchases. Anything having to do with Google is meant to mine your personal info, track what you purchase in order to target advertising at you.

Either use a credit card or a PayPal account. Use a credit card on PayPal - not a bank account, and not a debit card. If someone gets your credit card info, and fraudulently charges stuff, you are not liable. If they have your debit card info, the money is already drained from your account and you have to fight the bank and all the stuff in the fine print you missed like them being liable for a certain amount or percentage.

If you typically sign on to Google to get email, sign off when done.
  • What amazes me is the HIPPA medical privacy laws - when you can't even get one doctor or nurse to share medical info when you NEED it, but any of that is available on the web easily. You practically have to initiate your own cardiac arrest to get a continuum of care anymore - but the rest of your life history is right out there in public even when you try to keep it private.
  • The one most shocked me was the Social Security web site.

They want you to sign up for 'My Social Security'. So you can do more on line yourself instead of calling or going down to their office.

Privacy Policy: Every time you look at your social security info via this they hit your credit report. They also sell all your personal info to present creditors, past creditors and any future ones!!

A friend of mine in Florida who was helping a senior relative apply for food assistance said that when you sign up for food stamps, on-line read their privacy policy too!

Because when you hit the submit button.....You have agreed to have ALL your personal information sent to the local Sheriff's office data base. :?

Yep, it's like enlisting in the military. :)
  • Yes, it's amazing what people sign without reading. Just look at some TOS/TOCs out there to join a website like this.

Years ago, I watched a news story about these agreements. One man would read the TOS, then cross of anything he disagreed with and then sign it with the notation that if the company provided the service/product, they agreed to his alteration of the agreement. He said it was surprising how many businesses agreed. That's much harder to do with the internet, but if might be worth a shot.
  • sells your info to each and every place you purchase which can and does include your card number and personal info

Well, I would assume they'd need your card number if you PURCHASE something through them...

On the other hand, yeah, privacy on the Internet when it comes to purchases is pretty much gone. I really hate when they sell your info to other places. It has resulted in my home phone being used for nothing except spam/junk phone calls. I don't even answer it anymore unless I recognize the number.

I have 4 email addresses through 4 separate services.

One is a throwaway, so if I go to a site and need to register to purchase something, I use that email address. Any spam goes to the bit bucket.

One is my primary, the one I have to use for various things.

Two are backup email addresses - in case my primary is hacked, then I can use those email addresses to recover the primary.

Every so often, I google my real name to ensure there's not much out there for anyone to glance at.
  • Once you log on to the WWW your privacy has pretty much gone Kapoot, No Mas, everybody can see your junk, hello world here I am.
