Severe weather alerts via text message to cellphone?

I was wondering if there is any sort of severe weather alert service and/or app for a smartphone (android). I'm looking for something that would provide alerts for specific gps coordinates or maybe by zip code or county? The alert would be broadcast via text message if at all possible due to spotty cell service where we will be camped. I can almost always receive and transmit text messages but calls are spotty at best.

Thanks

Good app. It is called tornado. And it is free. No need to change locations as it constantly updates your location and notifies you of dangerous weather near you.
  • One of my Motorola Droids on the Verizon network through PagePlus came with Accu-Weather widget pre-installed. It actually startled the you know what out of me tonight, as the phone was on stand by, but wailed an alert tone for severe weather flash flood warnings in my area. May want to look into the Accu-Weather app/widget.

  • I highly recommend the Android app called Simple Weather Alert.
It's been awhile since I've been on the forums; however, I will try to provide you the link from Google Play. Here's the link (I hope):) Simple Weather Alert
In the free version, you only have one zip code/location you can enter but can purchase the Pro app for $1.99 and unlimited locations to monitor.
I would think one would be interested only in the immediate vicinity so the free version works for us. I have found when traveling across country, it wasn't difficult to find zip codes or counties to enter as the one location.
Hope this helps and did want to mention, this app monitors the National Weather Service and relays the weather threats in a very timely manner. Also, there are two different preferences - extreme to less severe or normal notifications - which allows settings for immediate, severe threats or not-so-threatening type of alerts. This smartphone app is so much better than the weather radio we had purchased.
    Safe and happy travels....JW
  • NOAA has an app. Sends alerts. I cannot stand accuweather or weatherbug apps. Constant crashes.
  • Weatherbug...in settings you can set it for a specific location or on your current location. If set to your current location it will us the gps to follow wherever you are. You can set up alerts as well that will alert your phone with an alternate ringtone if you want. I use 2 app widgets on my smartphone home screen. One is weather bug to follow me where I am and the other is the AccuWeather app set to me home town so I can see what it like where I am and what it's like at home at a glance. I also use the paid version of Radarnow another excellent weather app.
  • Yes there is and my wife's just went off about 35 minutes ago since we had a tornado in the area. She usesAccu-Weather and it alerted us by the location we were currently at.
  • I would check the "National Weather Service" web site to see if they have an app, I have our local news station's weather app on my phone and it has been a big help a few times, but that is local only.

I never thought about while traveling.
  • I get them from weather.com app.

The cool thing is they come to your phone without your doing anything because with gps they know where you are.
