All the pictures I find for the Viao ultrabooks show M.2 SSD's. Chromebooks and the like (not true laptops) often use soldered on flash storage, but those are 16-64GB, not 250+ GB
If the OP is still in possession of the laptop, pictures of the guts from under the back cover and under the keyboard would provide a wealth of information.
Don't have it, gone back to Sony for repair. I did not open it up because local repair dude had called Sony and they said may be warranty which they then backtracked on. I will advise if they do offer assistance on the repair cost.
Here is link to the unit I bought...Sony Vaio SVT13
Your model is listed on Crucial.com as being up-gradable, while not 100% concrete evidence, it's a good sign. I think Sony's repair tech is telling you a story to make Mr. Kazuo Hirai some extra money by having you send it in for out of warranty repairs.
Here's a more concrete proof, an actual Sony certified replacement part:
Sony VAIO SVT13138CXS Hard Drive Replacement
So your laptop has a 7mm thin standard 2.5" SATA solid-state hard drive, pretty much any SSD 7mm or less will work for you, and a 240GB will likely cost about $100 from Amazon, Newegg, etc. 256GB is more a premium size, and fetches a bit higher price.
