I agree you are right mostly but and that is a big but, defragging reduces the life of an SSD. SSD's have a finite number of writes. Defragging cuts into that number. And of course it is a complete waist of time.
How many writes do you get? Ask the mfg.
Finite writes are in the 10,000 write range which most people are not going to exceed with normal use. One area where this would be a problem is with programs like Photoshop that create hundreds of temp files during each session.
Reads are not a problem and where there is the greatest performance gain. Ideal setup is a SSD for the operating system and applications and two mirrored drives (internal or external) for data. Good part of this approach is that if the computer fails you can easily use another computer to immediately access your data files.
I never store important data on portable devices that can be stolen or lost or damaged. Even having data in the "cloud", i.e at Google or Apple, etc. is a better approach than having it all on the computer's drive, whatever type it happens to be.
