SpaceX Starlink Update

SpaceX needs to launch at least 360 satellites (6 launches not counting May 2019 demo launch) into orbit to start offering service in latitudes around 53º (the Northern US, Southern Canada, etc) -- from the SpaceX WIKI.

Starlink launch #2 - slated for 12/31/2019

Starlink launch #3 - slated for January

1/2 way there by January

I expect the service will come at a fairly high premium similar to a satellite phone.
Suspect this is a method to connect Tesla vehicles and equipment without local providers. Consumer use will be secondary.

It will be at a very high premium, you can bet it all on that.

Probably so- early adopters of anything generally pay a premium. Gonna be interesting for sure.

Both Elon Musk and Gwen Shotwell have said numerous times that the subscriber cost will be competitive with current services. Consumer use will be far from secondary since the service will be worldwide.
  • And the more competition for ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon for mobile Data Usage the better...

I usually like to take a position of optimism as new technology is being rolled out (In this case more of a new approach of data feed - the actual new technology.). So I'll wait to see how things go, and cheer the effort on - and since we're spending some good money to get Data via both ATT & Verizon now - I'm hopeful this will be competitively priced to allow the canceling of some of our arsenal of accounts to have Data feed on the road...

Then again, I admit I'm a fan of Musk. Sure, he can be a bit flamboyant at times. But instead of sitting on his arse with the money he made from PayPal - he's out doing things that many people, and large companies, said could not be done. Tesla? Sure, it was certainly a game changer for the Auto industry and Electric Cars in general. But what is being done with Space X, I feel, is very impressive. He puts his money and mind behind his talk - and get's things done... Many may feel differently:)!

    Best to all,

  • For most people 5G will be the easy goto data service even if coverage has some limits.

I agree, he doesn't fit the typical mindset of most CEOs. Tesla was definitely a game changer, with other manufacturers racing to catch up. If anything, Tesla is not charging, no pun intended, enough for their cars? Finally making a profit last quarter, though having to sell 97,000 cars to do so? Elon Musk also made Tesla patients open-source for other manufactures own electric vehicle development use.

Most all manufacturers are scheduled to introduce new all-electric versions in 2020. I recently experienced the Porsche Taycan TurboS a few weeks ago at their new factory west coast training facility. IMO, the most beautiful Porsche I've seen to date both inside and out, with mind boggling performance. Though at $200k+ w/options, out of the range of most of us including myself. Making Tesla look like a bargain?
  • time2roll,

Agreed. For between 45000 and 60000 you can get a car that stomps 97 percent of production cars on the road. And the remaining 5 percent are all over 200,000 bucks.

    Exactly what I said.
