S&T to GPS

I was reading a posting about GPS and Streets and Trips and was wondering if it's possible to plan a tip on S&T and then loading it to a Garmin GPS. It never fails, I plan a trip going a specific was and Alice (GPS) wants to take us a different direction. Sure would be nice to go the way I want to go. Oh Ya, I tried the thing that mounts onto the window for the S&T that functions as the GPS but there is not enough sound from the laptop.

Yes, you can by using the save and import features. Or you can plan the trip in S&T. Then "re-plan" the same trip in Garmin's BaseCamp or MapSource.

I solve this problem by putting a number of waypoints or via points in my trip if it is longer than about 200 miles. For example I like to plan where I am going to fuel up at Flying J - Pilot truck stops. Or a Walmark (that is on my way) that I am going to stop at an buy supplies for a picnic lunch.
  • I don't have a 'tools' option on my Garmin Nuvi 52, just a 'settings' options with sub-options: system, navigation, display, time, language, map. None of which have any files.

yes, it is very easy to load S&T into most/all garmin GPS.

Plan your route in S&T and do a normal file save. then on the toolbar select "Data" and "export to GPX". pick a file name to save under. Then you can load that .gpx file into the garmin. If the garmin has a SD card, stick the SD card in your computer, save the gpx to the sd card and put it back in the garmin. You can then select that saved route on the garmin. Or plug the garmin into your laptop and transfer the file.
That's what I did but cannot find the file on my Garmin. :?

My Garmin has a folder titled GPX. Look in there.

I don't have my GPS in front of me but as I remember you must scroll through the menus to find the Import Data command. Select that and it will show the possible gpx files to import. Once imported correctly you will see a Route available to be selected. This of course assumes your GPS device does routes (some don't).

On my RV760 it shows up under "trip planner" as a saved route by the title I gave the .gpx file.

on my nuvi's it shows up in the .gpx folder.

  • Theoretically, it is doable but I haven't figured it out yet. It (S&T) says the file has been transferred but I can never find it on my Garmin. Please let me know if you figure it out. I like to plan my trips using the roads I prefer.
  • To get around GPS's inate ability to take me a route I don't want, I set shorter trips using favorites. Then it can't ignore me.
