Stand alone mapping software

Technology marches on. What works just fine is no longer available. Laptops with DVD players have gone the way of the DO DO bird.

MS Streets & Trips is no longer available. Delorme Street Atlas seems to be the only game in town & it is sold on a DVD.

Problem is, I want to install it on a new laptop that, of course, does not have a DVD player. Understand that I want to install the whole thing, not run from the DVD.

GRRRRRR...how is this done?

No, I do NOT want any internet based navigation app. I want a replacement for my MS Streets & Trips.
  • I just installed an older version of Delorme Topo on my win 8.1 tablet. Using my laptop, I copied the entire contents of the install DVD into a folder on a flash card, and then moved the flashcard to my tablet. Then I navigated to the folder on the tablet and ran the install. Easy!
  • If you have a friend with an internal DVD reader on their PC you could have them write a disc image to a USB thumb drive or an SD card, then load the program to your PC from that. I have all my program discs saved to a portable HD for back-up purposes and also to avoid carrying bulky discs on the road.

I have used Atlas for many years. It can be a little querky and some of its functions are not terribly intuitive, but it is extremely powerful; much more powerful than any dashboard GPS system I have ever seen.
  • Didn't even think of Amazon & downloading. Not many reviews yet on the 2015. Lots of negative reviews on out of date mapping. Hmmm, maybe I'll wait till into next year before persuing this one further.

Laptop with S&Ts is still going at 5 years old & tens of thousands of miles of getting jolted on the roads but I figure it is on borrowed time.
  • DeLorme runs from the local hard drive once installed. Install it from a USB DVD drive and you'll be good to go.

That's a 4.7gb download from Amazon, and will take at least an hour. Personally, I'd rather have the DVD on hand. I tend to reload computers from time to time.

  • Delorme runs after loaded. Buy a plug in DVD to load it. Haven't checked but you may be able to download the program off internet then you have it. The reason I had it shipped was for the gps usb adapter.
  • You can buy a portable DVD Player for $30+ with USB and load it that way. I did that on one of my laptops.
  • Just purchase an external usb dvd drive and install from that. The external drives are inexpensive.
