They do stop power surges, but also check the wiring at the post to make sure it is wired correctly, shuts off power if it is to high or to low , has a time delay so if it shuts off the power for being to low or high it gives the AC time to bleed off pressure before restarting. To low of power has a cumulative damage to elec. motors you won't see the damage right away but it will catch up with you.
So if you check the power at the post at every hook up, sit and watch a volt meter 24/7 for low or high voltage you don't need one.
