Well, we've been camping since our first pop-up purchase in 1988. And, until this month, we've never had a surge protector. But prior to buying our new trailer this past summer, I did cause the capacitor to blow in the ac of our previous trailer. It was my fault...tried to run the ac on a circuit that just couldn't handle it. The repair cost me almost as much as what I just spent on a 30 amp portable Progressive Industries surge protector which would have prevented the ac from trying to run when the circuit wasn't adequate. For a little over $200, I thought it was time to buy a unit that would not only protect against a sudden surge, but also protect our new trailer from low/high voltage, improper grounding etc. that the better surge protectors are capable of doing.
Considering what anyone spends on an RV, spending a couple of hundred bucks to prevent a possible situation that could damage the ac unit, refrigerator, microwave, power converter, or television seems to be the smart thing to do. It only takes one bad campground/campsite incident to create a problem where the cost of repairs far exceeds the outlay for a good surge protector.
