SWM system problem connecting

This is about DirecTV services.

I'm fairly confident that re-doing the coax cables on my trailer's roof for my SWM system up there that connects my 'Traveler' sat dish to my GENIE receiver inside will solve the problem. I've done troubleshooting before.

However, I've always worked inside. The coax up on my roof looks slightly corroded, and the rubber sleves protecting the connections are falling apart. After three years, only.

So, I have my work cut out for me. My question;

Should I clean the SWM system component ports before installing the four new 2' coax I'm buying?

I realize now that the rubber grommets aren't sufficient. Should I also use silicone sealant? I think I probably should, so I should put it on AFTER the new grommets, right? Or should I put the silicon on, then squish the rubber grommets on? Or what?

Also, If I should clean everything, I'm thinking 'Electronic Cleaner' sprayed in the holes before attaching the coax, then let it dry.

  • Many folks do many things. If you use the correct compression fittings and some dielectric grease it won't be messy and it will keep all of the connections free of moisture and corrosion.
  • I use Heng's roof coating for my roof wiring. Messy, but gets the job done.
  • You do not need ANY rubber booties. When you are installing new cables with new compression fittings just apply a dab of dielectric grease inside the fitting and it will last nearly forever.
    I suspect that you will find it's in pretty good shape now and just wiping things clean and using grease on the new connections will make for a pretty easy update.
  • If you have any doubts about the connectors I would certainly change them. I've replaced all of my connectors with these. They are waterproof and don't require any kind of boot. I personally wouldn't spray anything into the ports. Good luck.
