I'm totally confused (my normal state). If your tablet does not have a GPS, a connection to a cell tower, or a connection to wifi while you are moving down the road, how is it able to track your progress in real time like a stand-alone GPS does?
Because just about every tablet made today (even the cheap $50 ones) does have a GPS receiver built in.
Two points:
- GPS determines the latitude and longitude of the device.
- You need a map to figure out where the lat/long is.
There are many apps you can download with maps. Google Maps is one of the most common. The trick with Google Maps is to view your route or use the route function before you leave wifi range and it will download the map before you leave. Other apps may download the entire map area ahead of time but may be out of date or less detailed.
- It does have the limitation that if there is a crash or other traffic issue and you are only using GPS (no wifi or other internet connection), the mapping apps won't know about the issue. Likewise if you want to find a restaurant or gas station along your route, having an internet connection works much better.
