Well I have one more possibility. I just replaced my first HP Photosmart printer (E Print type) with a new one about one month ago.
When going through wizard for printer set-up everything goes smoothly except for the built-in fax set-up. The questions asked by wizard can be very confusing (Chinese or Japanese to English).
Everything checks out saying everything okay. However; the very first incoming call answered by the HP printer fax (4th ring). The phone company voice-mail set up for 7th ring.
The phone ID said call was from Walgeens (usual message for wife on prescriptions) so I let it ring for voice-mail since she was away shopping.
I finally fixed the set-up on fax by turning "auto-answer" off. I did notice while testing different options that it is possible for the new HP printer to actually answer all calls on the first ring if you tell the wizard that the fax is on it's own phone line.
It was possible to find these calls with number listed in the "Incoming calls" as a failed fax (list found on either computer or printer screen).
