Hiding the desktop icons is NOT such a dumb idea Monkey, if you use it to your advantage. Why have a desktop cluttered with all those pesky icons all over the place? On top of that, in order to access one of those icons, you have to go to the desktop which is a PITA.
I hide the icons on the desktop and have been doing it since Win 2000. I then create a desktop toolbar (right-click on the Task Bar at the bottom of the screen (while viewing the desktop) then select Toolbars->Desktop). This creates a menu on the right-hand side of the Task Bar with all of the links from my hidden desktop icons. Now I can access all of my hidden desktop icons without the bother of needing to actually go to the desktop and my desktop stays clean as a whistle. I also create folders and organize the desktop icons and can access those folders from my desktop toolbar.
