I recently posted the screenshot below showing a pretty minimal icon-laced desktop, with the most used icons across the top and that side pop-out menu on the right.

That menu is a folder full of many other lesser used shortcut icons that were formerly all over my pretty bridge picture. I could just as easily place all thr icons in thr pop-out/autohide right menu, but choose to keep my most often accessed ptogram shortcut icons across the top.
To do the same (in XP, so surely also in W7 and maybe W8), just right click anywhere on the desktop and a mrnu comes up to allow you to create a desktop folder icon to be fillrd w/ stuff - secondary shortcuts, in this case. I named it Apps.
One by one, grab all your desktop shortcut icons and drag/drop them into this new 'Apps' folder icon. Then grab this icon and whoosh it into the right edge of your screen, and voila.
