I have my mail accounts set to Empty Trash. So I will not be able to help you.
Once I trash it, I no longer want it.
Under "Disk Space" check to see if you have "Don't Delete any messages" checked.
I also changed all my 8 mail accounts from IMAP to POP accounts.
