Transferring Docs/Files from one Computer to Another?

Our desktop is in the shop for a few days. The wife wants to get started on a photo project doing scanning with the laptop. The laptop currently is lashed up with the scanner. My Question is. Wh...

I have 32GB thumb drive and transfer folders containing 1000+ pictures (many GB's) in less than a minute. Most pictures done recently are >3 MB along with HD movies (20 to 65 MB each). Thumb drives are on USB2 (not USB3).

Having a newer high-end computer makes the difference. I have a Asus I7, 8-core, computer from fall of 2011.
