Traveling with laptop or ipad??

In the past I have always traveled with my trusty laptop to receive / send email and tend to financial matters (when secure connection available)... Now I want to do the same thing but only with my samsung Galaxy 10.1 pad instead of the Windows Laptop. The apps are installed on the pad.. just wondering about the drawbacks (if any) of just using the pad (when using a secure wifi connection)... comments?

Laptop with internet service. I would never do any banking on a cell phone or wifi only ipad.

From what I have read there really is no guarantee on secure when using any wifi. And IMHO secure on a cell phone just doesn't exist.
