From what I have read there really is no guarantee on secure when using any wifi. And IMHO secure on a cell phone just doesn't exist.
I don't think your laptop is any more secure than, let's say a Blackberry. If the hacker(s) want, they will get you. The only safe way is avoiding the internet for financial matter.
