Will USB 2 accessories work with USB 3 ports ?

I plug USB-2.0 devices into a 3.0 port all the time, no tribble, no improvement
Likewise most 3. devices will work, though slower, in a 2. port (Though there may be exceptions here).
In fact my 2.0 Smart phone is plugged into a 3.0 port on this computer as I type.
