Thanks for the replies. Wife purchased a Nexus off ebay for $100. Looks brand new, don't see any scratches or dings, 30 day return window. She likes it so far and has purchased a second battery.
When she took it into the verizon store for activation the clerk gives her the old, 'well let me see if I can save you any money by changing plans' line.
A few seconds later he says that at least one line on the family plan will be buying retail phones forever given how much data it uses each month. He said there was nothing he could do to save us any money on new plans etc. Then he leaned over the counter and strongly suggested that she do whatever it takes to keep the unlimited data plan for as long as possible.
