You might want to look into a file browser like ES File Explorer. This will let you view the files on your device.
By default, your pictures are stored in the sdcard\DCIM folder. This would be the first place to look to see if the pictures are still on your device. It could be a caching issue within the Gallery, it could be a media scanner issue or something else entirely.
