Verizon vs AT&T

Here's our situation:

We'll be using devices for a personal wifi hotspot and wireless home phone when we RV in the U.S. We're planning to be in the southwest, and we'll probably at some point head across the south to Texas...might even get up to Florida some day.

We've spoken to reps from both of these providers, we've compared costs and plans. It comes down to coverage. We figured this forum would be the best place to ask because areas that RVer's go would be our concern.

If I could find a way to post a poll to this forum, I would. So far, it appears that most people here use Verizon.

In cost comparison, it is not cost effective for us at this time to acquire U.S. cell phones, so we've decided on using wireless home phone (we have a condo in the U.S. with a land line, so we want to change that so we can bring that phone with us in the R.V. when we go on the road). We would have the wireless home phone device and a separate hotspot device, such as a Jetpack from Verizon or an AT&T device.

So...for any and all who care to chime in, we would really appreciate your input. Verizon or AT&T?

Thanks!
  • The most common answer to this question is that Verizon is the best but we've had AT&T for years and almost always have service. We do upgrade our hotspot regularly so that might have something to do with it.

Check the coverage maps for the areas that you think you'll be spending the most time. Both AT&T and Verizon have gaps.
  • We camp a lot on the Oregon Coast.
ATT was very spotty or non-existent. Switched to Verizon and can always get a signal everywhere.
  • We have both and Verizon is the best. Only twice in our trips did ATT have coverage and Verizon didn't.
  • When I ran long haul I had Verizon and had good coverage. My students had a variety of phones from different providers and would often have poor/no coverage. Just reinforced that Verizon had the better network. That was a couple of years ago and the others have made gains I'd imagine.

For us if you only stay near the Interstate Roadways or large cities almost any of them work. If you want to get way back off the roads then Verizon was always the best coverage... Even works in rural ALA and MS

All of the providers have very active coverage at different places. All depends where you are...

The seller for me was my working years that took us to all parts of the USA working on DOD Electronic Systems. Verizon was best thumbs down...

Verizon seems to not have the best deals however...

    Just my thoughts...

  • Verizon, hands down. we've been all over the west and apart from a few valleys where we have been shaded by mountains have yet to find a spot where we did not have coverage.
