Verizon will not install SIM for IPad2

What is going on? I went to the Verizon outlet in Mesa, Az and asked to provide me with their basic, month to month plan for my IPad2. They tried to sell me some kind of gizmo. All i wanted was Sim card and $20 plan. They claimed that it cannot be done, since I have already a Roger card from Canada on my IPad. WTF?

Please share with me your experiences with taking your IPad from Canada to USA. Thanks.

  • Suggesti you take your IPad to an Apple Store and have them tell you what can be done.

  • iPads with cellular are LOCKED to specific carriers. Other carriers' SIM cards will not work.
  • iPads use the same wireless technology as cell phone. The two basic technologies are GSM and CDMA. The wireless spectrums used by these twp technologies are also broken down into multiple bands. Different phone services typically use different bands, although there is some overlap. Most devices built up to this point are built for specific services and only support that services' band in the spectrum, although that may be changing. Also, GSM and CDMA devices can't be converted between the technologies. GSM devices use SIM cards for device configuration; CDMA devices typically don't.

Rogers uses CDMA and here in the US Verizon and Sprint also use CDMA. I suspect the bands used by all three services don't overlap and the absence of a SIM card makes it impossible to reconfigure your device. Now there are some services that do use something similar to a SIM card for their CDMA devices and Rogers might, but if Verizon doesn't you're screwed.
  • A year or so ago I tried to do the same thing that you are now trying to do, and was told that it couldnt be done.

I was given an iPad as a gift a year or so ago with the AT&T simm card installed. I don't really care for their service, and after some reasearch I found I could get a better deal through Verizon. I took the iPad to the Verizon store and they told me that it could not be switched over. Not sure if I believe it or not, but this is what I was told....
