Does your laptop have 3 mm headphone port? Maybe try the earbuds for your cell phone and see if that is picked up.
If you unplug the lifeChat headset and reboot, does the computer show a message that it recognized the headset being plugged in?
There's a setting in Win 10 to recognize your microphone, it might be turned off. Try going to SETTINGS - SOUND and then see if it sees an input device for your headset. You can try using the troubleshooter on the sound page, though I've never had much luck with Windows troubleshooters.
Also it might be a microphone privacy setting. Try this link for step by step instructions to verify if the settings are correct.
