I tether my phone to my PC using PDANet as well as stream movies using Netflix. I've done this for years and have never been bothered by Verizon, even when in some months I have used as much as 18GB of data.
I was blowing through 20 gig with Verizon and wasn't watching videos etc. I know nothing about this stuff so I searched on line and there was mention of disabling auto updates. I ended up with DSL while home for the summer but I need to get something when we leave for the winter. I was just using my phone to my laptop.
