Warning to All Android Phone Users

Google just implemented a new security measure within the past couple of months.

Make sure you know your Google User ID and Password.

If you have to perform a reset of your phone for any reason and don't know your Google info to initialize it after the reset you are screwed. You will have to go to google.com and work through their system to reset your password and when you enter this new password into your reset phone Google takes a phone reset and password reset to mean the phone has been stolen and they lock the phone completely for 72 hours. It can not be released by anybody including your phone carrier.

This just happened to me and I had to go to my carrier and buy a cheapo phone which was activated on my account to get me through the 72 hour period.

When I say "locked down" I'm not kidding.

    This makes no sense at all....you buy the phone from Verizon and never enter any google stuff into so what user name and password are we talking about. This is just a simple dumb cell phone?

    Agree. Never any delay on my iPhone 6 or previous iPhone 4 when I accidentally put in a wrong code.


    Agreed. This information is not even close to correct. I am thinking maybe a stab at humor on the Govt. lawsuit.

    I have an android and I have never 'HAD' to set up a google account to use it. I tend to like it that way.

    If you choose to set up a Gmail with a password it is separate from a google account. You do not have to have a google account to activate or use your phone.

    I do have a gmail email account and my phone asks me all the time if I want to set up a google account/password and I just say no. My phone has no password. It IS possible. Don't let them tell you otherwise. :W

    The reset protection feature only applies to smartphones running Android 5.1 and up. It was introduced about a year ago.

    Not sure if I have used my phone twice in 72 days.
    72 hours should be manageable ;)

    Just throwing this out there for all of you who have a smartphone and say you never login to your Google or iTunes accounts, and for those who just don't realize.
    The only way to get the maximum usage from your smarphone is to link it with an online account.
    All Andriod phones use a Google ID, all iPHones use an iTunes (or Apple ID). Without this you'll never be able to add apps, or receive your email.

    I agree, you can reset it online at Google.com. But when you enter the rest password in your reset phone Google assumes a reset phone and a reset password means the hone is stolen. It then locks the phone down for 72 hours.

    I have a complete mirror backup of my phone so I'm not going to lose anything. I'm just waiting on 1:03pm tomorrow before I can start using my locked phone again.
