Warning to All Android Phone Users

Google just implemented a new security measure within the past couple of months.

Make sure you know your Google User ID and Password.

If you have to perform a reset of your phone for any reason and don't know your Google info to initialize it after the reset you are screwed. You will have to go to google.com and work through their system to reset your password and when you enter this new password into your reset phone Google takes a phone reset and password reset to mean the phone has been stolen and they lock the phone completely for 72 hours. It can not be released by anybody including your phone carrier.

This just happened to me and I had to go to my carrier and buy a cheapo phone which was activated on my account to get me through the 72 hour period.

When I say "locked down" I'm not kidding.

Not everyone agrees that storing all our info in the cloud is desirable.
Just because everyone does not agree does not make it a bad idea.

As for Google's GMAIL Contact Manager, if you have an android smart phone, you are really missing the boat / missing out, not using same. Again elderly, etc. especially, foolishly avoid using it.....
I am "elderly" and I have no problem using Google's cloud to make my technology much more productive. I now have a Google Nexus 5x phone that is pure Android with no cell carrier or phone manufacturer apps on it. What a dream compared to my previous Samsung Galaxy phone. Google's gmail, contacts, calendar, drive, docs and other apps are shared across all my devices (smartphone, tablet, laptop and PC) and are basically seamless. One logon username/password (gmail account) for all.

Everyone is entitled to their own preferences but don't give in to your fears. You will be missing excellent solutions.
  • Update: As of 1:08pm yesterday my Note5 let me sign in using my Google ID and newly reset password. After a restore all is well.

I can assure you I won't lose this password again. But when Verizon told me 72 hours they weren't kidding.
  • My Galaxy is so hacked up with an international OS, I restore threw the bios., won't effect my restore at all.

Neither does the fact that you like something make it a "good" idea. Not that good or bad have anything to do with it. More like benefits and risks.

Don't assume you understand anything about my use of cloud functionality. I shared a simple observation, nothing more.

Every tool has it use, and no tool is appropriate for all uses.

Just throwing this out there for all of you who have a smartphone and say you never login to your Google or iTunes accounts, and for those who just don't realize.
The only way to get the maximum usage from your smarphone is to link it with an online account.
All Andriod phones use a Google ID, all iPHones use an iTunes (or Apple ID). Without this you'll never be able to add apps, or receive your email.

Believe it or not, there are people who actually use their cell phones as TELEPHONES.
