People are freaking out because they don't like the Metro screen. It is one click to dismiss it and return to your desktop. People are freaking because there is no start button. It is easy to put that back. People are freaking because their documents don't open in the programs they expect, that is as simple as changing your file associations (picture open in adobe instead of "photo app").
X2; this really isn't such a difficult problem to solve. A combination of installing Classic Shell and disabling all the "gestures" on my touchpad makes my computer look and act just like Windows 7. I never see the Metro screen unless I try to bring it up and I rarely ever do. The computer boots to the Desktop and stays there.
Some people say they like Windows 8 and that is fine. If you don't like the way it comes out of the box then you can take some steps to make it more to your liking. Removing it does seem rather drastic.
