This tells me that perhaps the problems you are seeing are due to the default programs that are assigned to open the various extensions on your computer. Do you have Office installed on the Win 8 computer? If not, the default program for DOC files is probably Wordpad, which is limited in what it can open so the OS prompts you to install a compatible program that can open the document.
When your editor sends you a document, do you download it to a folder on your laptop or do you simply open it from within the email program? Do you know what program is assigned to open documents with a .doc extension on your Win 8 computer?
