I am pretty sure that this is true.
I think each OS license is for 1 computer only.
As for MS phasing out support for older programs, for OSs like XP and W7, they announce up front that your license is only good for, say, 10 years. Bryond this time, they no longer want to spend IT manhours to keep the legacy stuff compatible w/ new stuff.
I knew we would lose use of Office 97 on W8, but figured we did use it a lot and it had been a good value.
If it is 2003 or better, sounds as if you can get your version of Word to do right on W8, and it really is a souped up W7 under the hood. As others are saying, there are some ways to ignore the tiles, and maybe W8.1 will help some.
