For those tracking this, I just opened my older Dell laptop with Wdw7, and opened the email file my editor sent - the same file that converted itself. It loaded fine, opened in Wdw7 and in MSWord 2007, same program we both have on our LT - so, that answers at least one question - something in Wdw8 transfers this file into the new Word program.
Based on other commenters, maybe when you loaded Office 2007 onto W8, the standard Office defaults for docs was applied and you need to now go in and reset the doc types to your preference again ---- you probably did this in W7 on the Dell a while back and forgot.
Maybe so, maybe not, but it seems to me these tech designers should understand we buy the PC and programs assuming (I know, assuming) we can continue. I don't buy a new PC or LT because I want updates programs, I buy it because the one I have breaks -- stops working properly ... I don't want a new one particularly, and am perfectly happy with the LT and the programs I have now, but it broke down. But, I'm not interested in continuously updating and spending more money on something I'm happy with ...
Yes, I tried to make Word '07 my default - matter of fact, except for adding "apps" or "patches" - I did most of what you guys have offered as help. But it simply will not accept it - could be me, of course, the way I try, but still, as a comparison - how many of you would want a new truck to come, and then when it arrives the salesman says - Okay, you just paid for the shell, now we can put tires, brakes, a steering wheel, and a rear seat, and whatever else for an additional $5000, which we forgot to tell you about. That's what I feel happened here, more or less. Right, tires and brakes wear out, but not the day you buy the truck.
