I just go a smart phone and am interested in what apps & the name you find useful on the road. I am planning a month long trip July and need some help as this is all new to me. I don't have a verizon card for my laptop. I understand you have to subscribe, I will only be doing this long trip for a month & then local for the next year or so.Also if there is some web sites on the laptop. I got MS Streets & Maps, and I have the next exit book, maps, AAA books, travel stuff from each state location. Trip from S.F., Ca. I80 thru SLC, up to Casper, Wyo, Gillette, Wy. Devils Tower, Spearfish Canyon, Deadwood, Custer SP, Mt. Rushmore, Badlands & area, then off to Denver, Colo Springs, & home not sure if comming back thru Vegas or SLC will make that decission in Colo.I'm trying to find an app that will tell me where the next reststop is or the next Pilot/Flying J. etc. that will ck my GPS location & so we don't have to try n fumble etc. & I can sort of guage my breaks.I've got my Campsites except for when I leave S.D. & head for Denver & Colo Springs. Any all suggestions experiences will be appreciated.

Actually, the most useful one I've found is the Yellow Pages. My GPS doesn't have updated info on businesses - they change all the time.

When traveling on interstates I like iexit. Tells you the upcoming exits and what is there. Rest stops, restaurants, gas etc.. It has been pretty accurate but I have only used it in California.Other usefule ones are google translate (language translation), google maps (for navigation), gps essentials (good for all your gps needs), mixology (drink recipes for when you get where you're goin'), netflix (so you can stream movies), gstrings (to tune your guitar around the campfire), wheree's my droid (use it when your phone is lost or stolen), pdanet (to tether your computer). As you can see the list just goes on and on. Really depends on what you want to do.

I would add Dishpointer to the apps that have been mentioned.

Not to steal the thread, but does "uninstalling" guarantee any more security with a Smartphone than it does in Windows? We know that some programs leave a trail or worse when leaving Windows.

Agree...That is why I have uninstalled several that I either have not used or really do not need,but thought they would be usefull.

As to whether or not they require the permissions they're asking for, you have to read their features and see what capabilities they provide and map that against the permissions they're requesting.

If it seems unreasonable, then don't install it.

I have quite a few free apps.But one thing was brought to my attention by a friend.Why do so many free apps want you to agree that it is OK to get your GPS location,telephone info,prevent phone from sleeping, have full Internet access,to be able to take pictures and videos etc.Brightest flashlight is one that wants this info.

My question is why?
I can understand that some apps need a certain amount of information in order to work,but why should a flashlight app need all that extra info???
Just wondering!

Oops, yes iPhone apps. If the equivalent apps are not available on Android I'd guess they soon will be. Sorry but can't check right now.

If fact with Samsung becoming the dominate mobile platforms I would imagine that developers are working hard on exactly that.
