We use small 11" and 12.5" netbooks which are highly portable and have Wifi 802.11N so we can use our mifi for Verizon data service via Millenicom or when public Wifi is available we can use it instead.
I buy the ones from Lenovo as they can be ordered with Windows 7 instead of Windows 8/8.1 and they provide support out of Atlanta by Americans - what a concept! The only other company to do this is Apple.
If you want an instant boot you can order them with a SSD instead of a hard drive, which also extends the battery life though it is still in the 4 hour range with the hard drive.
