Need to clarify some terms here:
WiFi usually refers to 802.11a/b/g/n - Requires an access point, often used in coffee shops, homes, schools.
Cellular data is usually referred to as Cellular, 3G, Edge, LTE, etc. Requires a data plan from a phone carrier.
MiFi is a WiFi to Cellular bridge device. Usually requires a data plan from your phone company.
Tether - Like a MiFi connection, but uses a device like a cell phone or tablet that has both WiFi and Cell to bridge the connections.
That said, another common reason to have a computer on the road is to have a place to put all your pictures. Common for people to take a bunch of pictures and then connect the camera up to the computer and copy all the pictures to the computer. Not really something you can do with a tablet.
If the laptop doesn't have WiFi, chances are it is older than 2005. Centrino/Pentium chipset. As most laptops after 2005 came with WiFi.
