i haven't tried off-line maps with Google in awhile so maybe they improved things? When I tried it, they only let you download the map data for about a 10 mile radius, if your route took you out of that area you were out of luck.
Why do people insist they need large screens for GPS? My favorite way to use my phone is to program the route (most often using voice commands) and start navigation, then blank the screen and put the phone in my shirt pocket. I can hear the spoken directions fine like that and rarely ever look at the screen.
