What is the best GPS for an RV?

So I am a little late getting to the party. I just found out that there are GPS' that are specific for RVing.

What is the best one out there and why?
  • Define 'best'

No GPS or on-line program like Co-Pilot is any better than the data submitted to them by the various states, POI agencies, etc.

Bad data, such as failure to list low bridges, can result in the GPS / program sending you down inappropriate roads.

It is always essential to review the route on maps, and be aware of which roads you should be traveling. That way if the GPS wants to send you somewhere strange - stop and review the map.

Don't be a blind duck turning down a road without knowing what is at the other end.

That said - I've owned Garmin's since they first came out, but I find the Rand McNally GoodSam GPS the best current one on the market. Simply because of the way it is organized to find POIs.

My Garmin cannot find military RV parks, the Rand does. The Rand finds RV suppliers, repair places, etc. Heck it even has a 'Quick Stops' button to find Walmart.

Look at the units available - insist upon being able to search for campgrounds, restaurants, attractions, scenic locations hundreds of miles from your location.

The RM also can give you a choice of two routing options most of the time.

Then when you get one - drive a set route of about 30 miles a few times - changing the settings for each trip - to make sure you understand how the options work.

Also, never take an RV down a road if the GPS is set to find 'Shortest Route'

That will certainly send you down a road where you don't belong with an RV.

But always review a paper or on-line map before starting out on a day's drive.
