- FizzExplorerA new iPhone with GPS uses satelites just like a regular GPS stand alone.
With it you can have dozens of specialized apps for whatever needs you have.
You also get a decent pocket camera. - SCVJeffExplorerI would never depend or expect Waze or any other 'live' GPS to do the same, although I run Waze in the background, my primary resident GPS (all data on board) is Navigon. If you have a smartphone, look at the real GPS apps and decide. My trusty Garmin still travels in the flight bag but I haven't pulled it out in two years since using Navigon on the iPhone
- eDUBzExplorerYeah I'm expecting not to have cell service . The last trip we didn't . This time we will be out on the road for 3 weeks.
- oldmattbExplorerMy purchase was because I didn't expect cell service in the area. (I will be using the GPS for other things too!) Satellites seem more dependable!

just use smart phone a WAZE
Waze works great when you have spare data for the month and cell phone signal. Dedicated GPS has its advantage. Go for something with more than one million points of interest. - trop-a-calExplorerjust use smart phone a WAZE
- oldmattbExplorerI have here on my desk a Garmin 64st that I just received last week. I had to locate a lot in the desert, and it did the job. Got it from Amazon! I just ordered the mounting bracket a couple of hours ago, so I can attach it to my ATV.
