There are a series of computer orientation videos here that might help you to understand some of the terminology being used. These are very basic, to the point of explaining what a keyboard and mouse are, but some go into a little more depth which could be helpful in understanding things such as the difference between RAM and hard drive space. If this doesn't help much, search around. There are lots of helpful sites out there.
Wondering about that old HP. Do you still have it? Has anyone checked if the black screen is caused by an inadvertent press of the function keys that turn it off? Seen that happen more than once in many years of PC support. For HP laptops I think it was Fn+F4. But don't quote me on that, I've been retired awhile.
