Several stores (e.g., Kroger, Family Dollar, Dollar General) will frequently have various TracFone and Net10 Android smartphones on sale in the $10-$20 range. I wanted a spare phone for my truck in case I left home without my AT&T iPhone. I picked up a TracFone LG Optimus Fuel last summer for $10. Uses Verizon. I buy a $20, 90-day card that gives me 180 texts, 180 talk minutes, and 180 MB of data. All texts, minutes, and data rollover if unused. For a spare phone, I couldn't ask for a more economical phone/plan. For OP, if your DW isn't a heavy phone user, something like this might work for her. Just a thought.
