Being an IT guy for a living I work with all the windows systems. Work laptop is Windows 7, client units Windows XP, and 2 home systems on 8.1 and an Ubuntu at home as well. Windows 8.1 when setup properly is very similar to Windows 7. My wife who is not computer geek at all has no trouble with switching from XP to 8.1. Minor difference and that is all. The trouble is the default is setting up for touch screens and us that run laptops and desktops need to make changes. When the changes are done I am not sure why there is all the hate for this system. I my 2 cases at home it runs very well and minimal differences from my Windows 7 on my work machine.
Don't worry be happy. Spend a little time and learn how it works and set it up to your liking and you will find it is actually better than a lot of the people that don't know windows software and set it up to your liking.

Win 8 explorer does not organize my favorites very well from the start menu.
Works fine in desktop mode.
If unhappy use Firefox or Chrome
Win 8 opens pdf in adobe instead of a browser window. Then back to the start menu when closed instead of desktop where I was.
Change you default program to open if you are not happy.
Win 8 does not seem to remember my log in and passwords very well. Ok maybe security was tightened but why as security should have been improved.
There are many password programs you can use if you are having issues.
Win 8 forgets how to talk to my network printer frequently. Win 7 never.
Maybe a setup issue. We have a wifi network printer setup in the house and neither of the 8.1 machines ever lose the connection.
Finding programs seems difficult and not as intuitive. Maybe chalk this up to the learning curve.
Learning curve.
Too much emphasis on spending money in the app store.
Never spen money on apps as there are many free ones out there.
Too much seems linked to an MSN account that I don't have and do not want... ever.
Just run it on a client basis as it is not necessary to login to Microsoft.
Maybe it is all just a matter of learning a new system. Still I am annoyed, very annoyed. Looking forward to Win 9 as I assume it can't be worse.
