The positive reasons for installing 8.1 are the improved performance and security. If you have a touch screen then you may consider that a positive reason. With the addition of the Stardock Classic Shell it boots to Windows instead of the metro interface so it's W7 like.
Version 8.1 Update is a required prerequisite for any and all future updates. Hence it's a mandatory update as who would not want future fixes and security updates? What hasn't been delivered yet is the full Start menu and the ability to place apps in a window on the desktop, apparently these are coming in the future, another update or W9 perhaps.
8.1 Update (strange version name) made some changes on my non touch screen PC like removing the settings etc from the upper right part of the screen and adding them to the Start menu. It is suppose to boot to Windows vs metro but I'm not sure since I have the Classic Shell installed.
By all accounts W8 is less accepted than Vista and so the tradition of every other OS being a problem continues at MS.
