Even when Win 8 first shipped, the Start screen was an option. I would have preferred to be able to boot direct to the desktop but it really only took 1 click to get there. Win 8.1 gave use the ability to boot direct to the desktop so no one ever needs to see the Start screen again if they don't want to.
Touch screen is not very useful on a machine with a mouse/keyboard but it works great on a device like a tablet without mouse/keyboard. I have a laptop, a netbook and a tablet that are all running Win 8.1.1. On the laptop and netbook, I use mouse/keyboard but on my tablet I use the touch interface. The beauty of this is that I can use the same OS and same mix of software on all 3 devices. With an iPad or an Android tablet, I would need to use a different OS and a different mix of software. I use software like FireFox, Excel, Word, etc... on all 3.
It perplexes me that people can't see how great that is.
