One aspect of new Windows releases is that most keyboard shortcuts remain consistent with previous versions. Shortcuts can save time by not having to maneuver through multiple menus. I use them all the time with both my desktop and notebooks.
Though haven't read through this thread, I'm sure its already been mentioned that there are several free apps to return WIN 7 style menus to WIN 8.1. Though Classic Shell is the most popular, I use the free Start Menu 8, but have also kept Tiles, so can easily jump back and forth between the two modes.
Notwithstanding, with my DELL WIN 8 convertible, I find that using a combo of hardware keyboard and touchscreen, vastly improves efficiency over using the archaic built-in track pad. I also do carry a Bluetooth mouse. Convertibles also come in handy, as you can flip the keyboard backwards to create a stand for watching movies on a full HD screen. Not to mention folding flat to act as a tablet, though somewhat large, but running a hefty Core i5 processor with full version of WIN 8.1.
